The Ghana Water Limited has announced ongoing water supply disruptions affecting communities across Tema and parts of Accra, citing unstable power supply and operational challenges at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant as the primary causes.
In a statement, the utility provider explained that the Kpong plant, one of the major sources of potable water for Tema and the Accra East Regions, has been experiencing inconsistent electricity supply, significantly affecting production and distribution.
GWL emphasized that its operations are heavily reliant on stable power, noting that water treatment processes, pumping systems, transmission facilities, and booster stations all require continuous electricity to function effectively. As a result, any interruption or fluctuation in power supply directly limits its ability to deliver water to customers.

The situation has been further worsened by an increased influx of aquatic weeds at the Kpong intake point. According to the company, while weed accumulation is a recurring issue, recent heavy rains around the Akosombo area have led to unusually high volumes, causing severe clogging of intake screens and restricting raw water abstraction for treatment.
The utility provider assured the public that technical teams are working around the clock to clear the weeds, maintain operations, and minimise the impact on supply. It added that active engagements are ongoing with key stakeholders, including the Volta River Authority, Ghana Grid Company, and the Electricity Company of Ghana, to ensure the swift restoration and stabilisation of power supply.
The combined challenges have resulted in intermittent and reduced water supply across several affected communities, particularly in the eastern parts of Accra.
GWL apologised to customers for the inconvenience caused and appealed for patience and cooperation, assuring that all necessary measures are being taken to restore normal supply as quickly as possible. The company added that further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
