The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert regarding the sale of falsified OHEAL Ampicillin and Cloxacillin Capsules.
The fake antibiotics were discovered and intercepted in Onitsha, Anambra State, through a joint effort by NAFDAC officers and the Nigeria Police Force. Genuine Ampicillin/Cloxacillin is a critical antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
The distribution of these falsified drugs poses a major health risks as they do not provide the necessary therapeutic effects and may cause harm to patients.
Although the falsified products were initially identified in Onitsha, NAFDAC warns that they may have been distributed to other parts of the country through informal markets.
To address this threat, all NAFDAC zonal Directors and State coordinators have been instructed to conduct surveillance and remove the counterfeit products from circulation.
The agency urges importers, distributors, retailers, and healthcare providers to exercise vigilance within the supply chain, ensuring that all medical products are sourced from authorized suppliers and thoroughly checked for authenticity.
“Members of the public who possess these falsified antibiotics are advised to discontinue their use and submit any remaining stock to the nearest NAFDAC office,” the agency wrote.
