The Minister for Energy, John Jinapor, is set to brief the nation today, Monday, April 27, at 2 p.m., on recent developments in the electricity distribution sector following a series of incidents affecting power stability.
The address comes amid growing concerns over the reliability and management of the country’s power supply, particularly after the recent fire at the Akosombo Power Control Centre and leadership changes within the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti Region.
Fire Incident and Grid Disruptions
The Minister is expected to provide updates on the fire outbreak at the Akosombo facility, which significantly impacted the national electricity grid and led to outages across multiple regions.
His statement will outline the government’s response to the disruptions and clarify measures being implemented to restore stability and prevent future occurrences.

CEO of GRIDCo Suspended Amid Investigations
A major issue likely to be addressed is the directive by Minister Jinapor for the CEO of the Ghana Grid Company to step aside pending investigations into the incident.
Confirming the development, the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that the decision was necessary to allow for a thorough and independent investigation into the cause of the fire and its wider implications for the national grid.
Leadership Shake-Up at ECG
The briefing will also cover recent leadership changes at the Electricity Company of Ghana in the Ashanti Region. The shake-up follows concerns about the region’s capacity to effectively manage electricity distribution, particularly in the aftermath of the Akosombo incident.
Today’s briefing is expected to provide clarity on both operational and leadership challenges within Ghana’s energy sector, as well as outline steps being taken to strengthen the resilience and efficiency of electricity distribution nationwide.
