Residents and businesses in large parts of eastern Accra and the Tema Metropolis are facing significant water shortages following a major burst on a 42-inch transmission pipeline on Monday, January 19, 2026.
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) announced the incident in an official statement, confirming that the damage has caused widespread interruption in water supply across the affected corridor. The pipeline, a critical artery supplying treated water from the Kpong Treatment Plant, serves as a vital lifeline for much of the region.
GWL engineers and technical teams responded swiftly, mobilizing immediately upon detection of the fault. They are working around the clock to repair the large-diameter line. Due to the pipe’s size and the technical complexity involved, the repair process demands careful execution to prioritize safety, long-term durability, and operational efficiency.
The company has assured the public that all efforts are underway to complete the repairs as quickly as possible and restore the normal water supply. GWL expressed deep regret for the inconvenience and thanked customers for their patience and understanding during this challenging period.
The disruption has affected a wide range of communities across the Tema Metropolis and much of Accra. Areas impacted include Ashaiman, Gbetsele, Akatamanso, Klagon, Lashibi, Baatsonaa, and Spintex, as well as parts of East Legon, Nungua, and Teshie. Several surrounding communities are also experiencing the effects, underscoring the extensive reach of the disruption across the metropolitan area.
To mitigate the impact on critical institutions, GWL has urged essential service providers—particularly schools and hospitals—to contact the company for assistance. Support channels include:
GWL reiterated its commitment to restoring the water supply immediately upon completion of the repairs. The company emphasized that it values its customers and is dedicated to resolving the issue promptly.
This latest disruption adds to ongoing challenges in Ghana’s water infrastructure, with similar incidents in recent years highlighting the strain on aging transmission systems serving the rapidly growing Greater Accra Region. Residents are advised to conserve water where possible and monitor official updates from GWL for further developments.
