Sogakofe Senior High School School, located in the Volta part of Ghana, has emerged as winners of the Energy Commission Sender High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge, 4th edition.
Following closely behind, the Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School secured the runner-up position.
This year’s competition, themed “Mechanized Small-Scale Agriculture Using Renewable Energy Technologies,” was organized under the auspices of the Renewable Energy Act, 2011 (Act 832), which mandates the Energy Commission to promote the development and utilization of renewable energy resources.
In partnership with the Ghana Education Service, the initiative aimed to stimulate interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency among students in second cycle institutions.
The challenge has evolved from its humble beginnings in 2019 as a pilot program involving 29 schools in the Greater Accra Region to a national competition that has captured the attention and enthusiasm of both academic and non-academic institutions.
Yaa Asantewaa Girls Senior High School secured the second spot in this year’s competition, showcasing the growing interest and competence of Ghana’s young minds in the renewable energy field.
The Energy Commission expressed its gratitude to its valuable partners, including the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), Ashesi University, Bui Power Authority, and Sunon Asogli Power (Ghana) Limited, for their unwavering support in making this competition a resounding success.
The Renewable Energy Challenge serves as a crucial platform for nurturing future leaders in the renewable energy sector and furthering Ghana’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions.
