Air France has made a significant move by launching direct flights from Paris to Dar es Salaam, marking its return to the sub-Saharan region after a 28-year absence.
This new route becomes Air France’s 31st destination in sub-Saharan Africa and its second in Tanzania, alongside Zanzibar.
The airline had initially considered canceling the Dar es Salaam route due to issues with ground handling, but diplomatic efforts ensured its continuation.
According to reports, Air France plans to operate three weekly flights using its 279-seat 787-9 aircraft, offering increased connectivity to travelers.
This development is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s aviation sector.

The addition of Dar es Salaam as a direct destination means that Air France will de-tag its Nairobi route, making it fully nonstop in both directions.
The Paris-Dar es Salaam market has historically been smaller due to a lack of colonial history, leading Air France to focus primarily on transit passengers.
However, the demand for direct flights from London to Dar es Salaam remains unmet, despite it being the largest European market for the Tanzanian city.
With over 50,000 roundtrip passengers in 2019, the need for nonstop service from London is apparent.
Air France now expands its sub-Saharan passenger network to 31 airports, solidifying its presence in the region.
Turkish Airlines currently holds the lead among European airlines with 39 destinations in sub-Saharan Africa, leveraging its narrowbody aircraft and strategic positioning for connections to Central and Eastern Africa.
Air France’s move will therefore enhance travel options for both business and leisure passengers, providing improved connectivity between Europe and Tanzania’s vibrant economic hub.
