President William Ruto, during an interdenominational service in Bungoma county, made a firm commitment to resolve the longstanding issues plaguing the sugar sector in the Western region.
He assured the public that his administration is determined to eliminate the sugar crisis and stated, “This is the government that will sort out this sugar problem in this region. Don’t worry I will ensure everything is in order.”
To this end, the President announced the waiver of a massive Sh117 billion in debts accumulated by sugar factories, promising the revival of five key sugar millers, including Nzoia, South Nyanza (Sony), Chemelil, Mumias, Muhoroni and Miwani.
The last two are currently under receivership. Ruto took a strong stance against sugar cartels, asserting that he would personally ensure that no external forces exploit the region or its people.
Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa praised the government’s decision, expressing hope that the upcoming sugar conference would address the majority of the challenges the sector faces.
He noted, “We appreciate your stand in the quest to revive the sugar industry by waiving the debts, you’ve made our work easier.”
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula called on leaders from the Lake Region Economic Bloc to prioritize the rejuvenation of the troubled sugar sector.
He emphasized the importance of introducing a new management model to prevent the recurrence of past issues.
