The Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services in Malawi has officially begun issuing electronic passports (e-passports) embedded with encrypted chips and enhanced security features in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards.
The new e-passports are designed to strengthen the authenticity and protection of Malawian travel documents while streamlining the application process through a permanent digital platform. Developed in partnership with Madras Security Printers, the system allows applicants to complete applications online, make payments via mobile money or bank deposits, and collect passports from designated centres nationwide.
Pasqually Zulu, spokesperson for the department, said samples of the new e-passports will be distributed to Malawian embassies and consulates globally to ensure smooth processing for international travellers. “People will just register at immigration, pay through banks or mobile money and apply online. This will save people from spending a lot of money and time travelling long distances to central offices. We have conducted thorough security checks to protect the system from cyber threats,” Zulu told the Malawi News Agency (Mana).
The development follows last year’s ransomware breach that disrupted Malawi’s passport system and delayed issuance. Authorities believe the new system will prevent similar disruptions while reducing congestion at immigration offices.
Additional features of the platform include SMS alerts to notify applicants when their passports are ready and an online appointment scheduling service – measures expected to improve convenience and efficiency for Malawian citizens at home and abroad.
