President John Dramani Mahama has announced ambitious plans to begin construction of a new Accra-Kumasi expressway early next year, as part of a broader infrastructure revitalization drive in the Ashanti Region under his “Big Push” initiative.
The announcement was made on Monday at the Jubilee House during a courtesy call by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. President Mahama emphasized that his administration is prioritizing investments in road networks, transport systems, healthcare, education, and trade infrastructure across the region.
“I know how much you care about infrastructure development,” the President told the Asantehene. He cited several past achievements during his previous tenure, including the completion of Kejetia Market Phase 1, expansion of the Kumasi International Airport, the Sewua and Afari hospitals, the 3K water project in Konongo and Kumawu, and multiple road improvements within the Kumasi metropolis.

Looking ahead, feasibility studies and designs for the Accra-Kumasi expressway are underway, with sod-cutting scheduled for early next year. President Mahama also pledged to complete the delayed Kejetia Market Phase 2 and revealed proposals for a Kumasi Outer Ring Road to divert heavy-duty traffic away from the city center.
Additionally, he announced plans to extend the runway at Prempeh International Airport to accommodate wide-bodied aircraft, further enhancing the region’s aviation infrastructure.
