The Police Service Commission (PSC) has promoted 684 senior police officers across various ranks.
The promotions were finalized during the PSC’s first plenary meeting of the new board on August 30, 2024.
The meeting was led by DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), the Commission Chairman, and included notable attendees such as DIG Taiwo Lakanu (rtd) and Commissioner and Chief Onyemuche Nnamani, Secretary to the Commission.
The promotions included a range of advancements: eight Commissioners of Police were elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police, and 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to full Commissioners.
Additionally, 52 Chief Superintendents of Police advanced to Assistant Commissioners, 525 Superintendents were promoted to Chief Superintendents, and 84 Deputy Superintendents moved up to Superintendents.
These promotions followed rigorous assessments, a new standard now required for such advancements.
DIG Argungu emphasized the importance of continuous self-development for the officers, highlighting the need for ongoing knowledge acquisition to address the evolving challenges of 21st-century policing.
He reiterated that formal examinations are now a prerequisite for promotions, in line with the Public Service Rules governing all Federal civil and public servants.
The Commission aims to ensure that all promotions are merit-based and predictable, stressing that deserving officers will not face delays in their advancement.
The newly promoted officers include notable figures such as CP Benneth Igwe, now an Assistant Inspector General of Police, and CP Augustina Nwuka Ogbodo, who has also been elevated to the same rank.
Among the 15 new Commissioners of Police are DCP Innocent Ifeanyi Emenari and DCP Betty Enekpen Otimenyin, highlighting the diverse geographic spread and expertise represented in the new ranks.
Spokesman Ikechukwuu Ani confirmed that the PSC has notified the Inspector General of Police for implementation of these promotions and further necessary actions.
DIG Argungu congratulated the officers, urging them to remain dedicated and focused in their fight against insurgency and banditry, as they assume their new roles in the quest to enhance national security.
