The Military College of Medical and Allied Sciences (MCMS)-Lugalo has inaugurated a new Health Information System (HIS) data centre, aimed at providing real-time data across the 21 health facilities under the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF).
Supported by the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) through the HJF Medical Research International Inc (HJFMRI), the centre is also integrated with the Ministry of Health DHIS2.
This integration, funded by the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), aims to enhance HIV services by offering a centralized data overview for improved program planning, management, and decision-making to sustain HIV epidemic control in Tanzania.
Speaking at the launch, WRAIR Tanzania Country Director Mark Breda highlighted the importance of the HIS, stating that it will improve the country’s efforts to achieve the UNAIDS 95-95-95 goals and improve the HIV treatment cascade.
Brigadier General Charles Mwanziva, TPDF Director of Medical Services, expressed gratitude for WRAIR’s support, noting that the investment will enhance the quality of healthcare services in the 21 TPDF health facilities.
The centre’s real-time data capability will enable healthcare providers to respond swiftly to patient needs, particularly in HIV care.
HJFMRI has invested over 900 million Tanzanian Shillings in the data centre’s equipment, fiber optic connectivity, and capacity building for the TPDF team, ensuring a robust and effective healthcare data management system.
