The National Government, led by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu, and the Homa Bay County Government have joined forces to scale up relief food distribution to communities affected by the recent El Niño rains and flooding.
The joint operation, supported by the County Disaster Management Team and the Kenya Red Cross, targeted the Wang’ Chieng’ Divisional Headquarters in Rachuonyo North Sub-County and Nyatoto in Suba South Sub-County.
These areas have been particularly hard-hit by the floods, which have displaced residents and destroyed livelihoods.

Residents of Osodo, Kobuya, Simbi, and surrounding areas received a consignment of essential supplies, including; 200 bags of rice, 50 bags of beans, 150 blankets, 10 boxes of soap, 80 jikos (stoves) and Sanitary pads.
Speaking at the distribution event, CS Machogu emphasized the commitment of both the national and county governments to providing immediate relief and support to those affected by the disaster.
He urged residents living in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground and remain vigilant, especially as heavy rains are predicted to intensify from mid-December.
He commended the county government for its proactive approach in mitigating such disasters and appealed to the leadership to allocate additional funds for ongoing relief efforts.
Homa Bay county commissioner, Mr. Moses Lilan provided an update on the extent of the damage caused by the floods, noting that 7,814 households have been affected, 8,690 acres of land submerged, and approximately 2,000 livestock displaced.
He also highlighted ongoing intergovernmental efforts to find a long-term solution to flooding in the region. This includes desilting River Miriu and constructing dykes along its banks to prevent future flooding during heavy rainfall.
