Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has refuted claims made by Hon. Sam Nettey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, regarding the procurement of a water treatment product named “One Drop.”
In a signed statement released today, GWCL asserted that the allegations were baseless and aimed at misleading the public.
The water utility company emphasized its commitment to transparency, adherence to regulatory procedures, and the continued use of established disinfectants in water treatment.
GWCL clarified that decisions on adopting new water treatment technologies are made through a rigorous evaluation process, involving consultations with regulatory bodies such as the Food and Drugs Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission.
“Per GWL’s Standard Operating Procedures, any decision regarding the adoption of new water treatment technologies or products is made through a comprehensive evaluation process, in consultation with relevant stakeholders and regulatory agencies like the Food and Drugs Authority, Ghana Standards Authority, the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission and communicated transparently to the public,” the statement read.
The statement further highlighted that no contract has been awarded for the supply of “One Drop,” and the current disinfectants—Chlorine Gas, Calcium Hypochlorite granules, and Chlorine Tablets—are in sufficient quantities at treatment plants and warehouses across the country.
“By GWLs internal procedures, management reserves the right to act on a positive evaluation report by writing to either the Public Procurement Agency (PPA) for sole sourcing or to advertise for competitive tendering processes. No contract has been awarded by GWL for the supply of the “One Drop” disinfectant for water treatment,” .
GWCL concluded the statement by calling on all stakeholders, including the MP and the public, to refrain from spreading unverified information that could undermine public trust in the company.
The management expressed openness to constructive dialogue and collaboration to improve water quality and access in Ghana.
