The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong, has highlighted the indispensable role of the livestock industry in Ghana’s economic development, emphasizing its potential for enhancing food security and sustainable growth.
Speaking at the media launch of ‘National Livestock Day’ in Accra, Acheampong underscored the sector’s capacity to drive both national prosperity and global competitiveness.
He stressed the importance of innovation, collaboration, and sustainability to build a thriving livestock industry that addresses the needs of Ghanaians and elevates Ghana’s presence in the international market.
The launch, organized by the Ghana National Association of Cattle Farmers (GNACAF) in partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Ministry of National Security, was held under the theme ‘A thriving livestock industry toward sustainable food and nutrition security for economic growth’.
Acheampong reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the sector through investments in infrastructure, training, and market access.
He acknowledged ongoing challenges such as conflicts between livestock herders and crop farmers, disease management, and infrastructure needs, while reaffirming efforts to collaborate with stakeholders to address these issues.
National Livestock Day, set to take place at Efua Sutherland Park in Accra on October 3-4, 2024, aims to celebrate the contributions of livestock farmers and highlight their critical role in food security and economic development.
The event will foster youth participation, attract investment, and promote improved livestock farming practices.
Hanafi Sonde, President of GNACAF, emphasized the importance of media partnership in raising awareness about the livestock industry’s impact, calling on all stakeholders to unite in advancing this vital sector for Ghana’s future prosperity.
