The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), has launched Market Response Centres in nine markets across the country to tackle sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).
This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to provide immediate support and resources to victims of SGBV within market communities.
A significant component of this effort includes training 110 market executives as paralegals.
These trained individuals will be responsible for referring SGBV cases to appropriate authorities and raising public awareness on the issue.
In addition to the Market Response Centres, the UNFPA Ghana has supported the Domestic Violence Secretariat (DVS) of the Ministry in establishing the Orange Call Centre.
This call centre offers a confidential and supportive environment for victims of domestic abuse. Services provided by the Orange Call Centre include psychosocial support, legal assistance, emergency shelter referrals, and information on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
The call centre is to ensure that victims receive comprehensive support and guidance in overcoming the impacts of domestic violence.
To further promote these vital services, the Domestic Violence Secretariat has conducted outreach programmes in several markets in Accra, including Domi, Teshie, Agbogbloshie, Nima, Madina, and Kaneshie.
These programmes are designed to educate the public on the prevalence and effects of domestic and sexual violence while highlighting the resources available through the Orange Support Centre.
The toll-free number for the Orange Support Centre is 0-800-111-222.
