In light of the National Health Insurance Authority’s (NHIA) paradigm shift from Curative to “Promotive and Preventive Healthcare and Wellness,” a team from the Head Office is on a nationwide exercise, training staff on the new policy.
This new policy direction, initiated by the Chief Executive, Dr. Dacosta-Aboagye seeks to promote the well-being of all residents of Ghana.
He also proposed routine checkup for Nhia staff at their various offices with the simple health apparatus. The ongoing nationwide orientation exercise, which began in the Ashanti Region, on Thursday, May 30, 2024, is to reorient the Psyche of NHIA staff to propagate the new policy direction.
The NHIA Regional and District management teams are expected to set up health and wellness units and the formation of wellness clubs and corners for the routine health checkups.At the opening ceremony, the Director of Administration and Human Resources at the NHIA, Head Office, Mr. Raymond Avinu who represented the Chief Executive, stated,
“The Chief Executive has demonstrated his commitment to staff wellbeing among others, hence the need for this orientation to put staff in the mood of encouragement as we embark on promotive, preventive healthcare and wellness.”
“The NHIS wellness clubs will be instituted across the regions to help keep everyone on check effectively and staff will be further accessed at the end of each quarter through our performance management system (PMS), so you must attach seriousness to this noble vision.”
The NHIA’s Ashanti Regional Director, Mr. Kwadwo Dwomoh commended the Chief Executive, Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye for prioritizing staff and the general populace well-being through the new policy direction.
“As we keep ourselves in check, we will be able to work more on preventive healthcare among communities towards Ghana’s attainment of Universal Health Coverage by the year 2030.”
The NHIA Operations Director for the Southern Belt, Mr. Kojo Tweneboa Kodua said the orientation exercise is to equip staff with the in-depth knowledge and skills to serve as ambassadors of the new policy direction.
“The Chief Executive’s policy is to equip us with the best healthcare practices, and it is our mandate as staff to achieve this vision by being healthy ourselves before rolling it out.”
“The staff of NHIA are paramount to Executive Management, hence its efforts to keep and maintain health and wellness among staff so that we can keep fit and healthy before going out there to promote the policy to Ghanaians.”
Madam Augustina Nartey, a member of the preventative and promotion healthcare team, took staff through the various health stages, including health needs, health merits and demerits, healthcare routines, good eating habits and regular exercises.
“This is just the beginning of the sensitization exercise. Further trainer of trainers exercises will take place after this with representatives from the district offices undertaking it.”They were also taken through stress management by Renee Opare Otoo, also a member of the prevention and promotion healthcare team.
