On Thursday 7th March 2024, a delegation comprising eleven Members of Parliament from Uganda’s Committee on Gender, Labour, and Social Development embarked on a study visit to Ghana’s Parliament.
As part of their itinerary, they visited the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MoGCSP) to engage in knowledge exchange and benchmarking sessions.
The primary objective of their visit was to compare and learn from best practices in gender, youth, and child-related policies between Uganda and Ghana.
Led by Madam Kabahenda Flavia Rwabuhoro, the head of the Ugandan delegation, the group expressed their eagerness to gain insights into social protection issues and gender equality initiatives.
Welcoming the Ugandan team, Madam Faustina Acheampong, Head of the Department of Gender at MoGCSP on behalf of the Chief Director, Dr. Afisah Zakariah emphasized the mutual commitment shared by both nations in advancing gender equality, youth empowerment, and social protection strategies. “We anticipate a continued collaboration and knowledge exchange between our countries,” she stated.
In response, Madam Kabahenda conveyed gratitude to the Ghanaian government and MoGCSP for the warm reception, highlighting Uganda’s efforts in addressing vulnerabilities and enhancing social protection mechanisms. She underscored their focus on safeguarding children’s rights while striving to improve service delivery.
Madam Kabahenda further disclosed Uganda’s ongoing initiative to develop a social policy register aimed at tracking citizens’ progress from birth to employment, among other milestones.
This register, she explained, would furnish them with real-time data on the welfare of citizens.
On the part of MoGCSP, the Director for the Department of Gender reiterated the government’s dedication to implementing policies geared towards uplifting the socio-economic status of the underprivileged in society.
During their visit, the Ugandan delegation received a comprehensive presentation from MoGCSP on its mandate, functions, and future prospects in promoting gender equality and social development.
The interaction between the Ugandan Parliamentary Committee and MoGCSP signifies a fruitful exchange of ideas and strategies aimed at fostering inclusive development and social welfare in both countries.
