National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) have taken decisive steps to relocate open drug marketers to Coordinated Wholesale Centres (CWC) in Kano, as part of the ongoing fight against Substandard and Falsified (SF) medicines.
This action follows a landmark court ruling ordering the relocation of pharmaceutical businesses from open drug markets to the newly built CWC.
Over the course of two days, NAFDAC and PCN conducted an enforcement operation, sealing 1,370 wholesale medicine outlets and packing stores in Sabon Gari, Malam Kato, and Mai Karaimi areas.
Owners of these outlets are directed to report to NAFDAC and PCN offices at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre for relocation arrangements, starting February 19, 2024.
This move marks a significant milestone in the fight against SF medicines, aligning with NAFDAC’s strategic goals under the leadership of the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye.
The enforcement action underscores the commitment of both Agencies to enhance regulatory oversight, mitigate the prevalence of SF medicines, and promote public health across Nigeria.
