The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has initiated a comprehensive registration process for road transport service providers, marking a significant step in its commitment to overseeing and regulating the road transport sector.
Effective March 2024, all entities involved in road transport services, including transport companies, unions, state agency transport departments, school bus services, tyre service centers, and garages, are obligated to register with the Authority to comply with legal requirements.
Failure to register according to the Authority may result in sanctions imposed by the NRSA, as mandated by law.
The regulatory move is part of the NRSA’s broader strategy to enhance road safety and service quality within the road transport sector.
Kwame Koduah Atuahene, the Director of Regulations, Inspections and Compliance, highlighted the digitalization of the registration process through an electronic platform called TransportGhana.
This technology is to streamline the registration and licensing of road transport service providers, monitor compliance with safety standards, implement e-ticketing, maintain an e-passenger manifest, enable vehicle tracking, and offer a service locator app for accredited services.
During a visit to the North East and Savannah Regions, Atuahene emphasized that the focus is on encouraging voluntary registration in 2024, with strict enforcement of compliance measures to follow.
The move aligns with the NRSA’s expanded mandate, as approved by Parliament in 2023, designating the Authority as the lead Regulatory Authority for Road Safety and Road Transport services under the National Road Safety Regulations, 2022 (L.I.2468).
This designation empowers the NRSA to regulate and ensure the safety and satisfaction of customers utilizing road transport services.
