The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has affirmed their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s Constitution and the sovereign will of its people, firmly rejecting any involvement in activities that threaten peace and democracy.
In a resolute declaration of their commitment to safeguarding democracy, the GAF have assured the nation that they will steadfastly protect the Constitution and the sovereign will of the people.
Speaking during a courtesy call by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), emphasized that the GAF’s primary mandate is to protect the territorial integrity of the state, disavowing any interest in governance.
Vice Admiral Amoama also lauded the media for their role in upholding the will of the people but urged responsible journalism, highlighting the importance of consulting with the military on security-related stories.
The CDS emphasized that coup d’états are a thing of the past, highlighting the nation’s development and the GAF’s unequivocal focus on protecting the nation.
“The coups in West Africa are a major concern, but, for us, we are resolved to protecting the Constitution and the will of the people.
If the people decide that democracy is the type of governance they want, then we need to respect that,” the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama said.
“Our mandate is to protect the territorial integrity of the State, and we are focused on that.
So, when you hear any news of coup, you should be assured that the Ghana Armed Forces is not interested in governance.
We believe that if the people don’t want the government, they have a maximum of four years to change it,” he added.
He underscored the importance of respecting the people’s choice of democracy, expressing that if citizens desire a change in leadership, they have the opportunity to do so within the democratic framework.
The President of the GJA, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, commended the media-military relationship, acknowledging its vital role in nurturing democracy and ensuring the media can fulfill its responsibilities without fear of military interference.
Dwumfour pledged the GJA’s commitment to strengthening this bond, fostering a collaborative atmosphere for the benefit of Ghana’s democratic principles.
