Botswana’s tourism industry has taken a major leap forward with the official launch of the Tourism Statistics Dashboard, a new digital platform designed to provide real-time insights into visitor trends, sector performance, and economic impact.
The dashboard, developed through a partnership between the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), represents a significant shift towards data-driven decision-making in one of Botswana’s key economic sectors.
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Gaborone, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Hon. Wynter Boipuso Mmolotsi, described the platform as “a bridge between evidence and action.”

He emphasised its ability to track international and domestic visitor arrivals, measure tourism’s contribution to GDP, employment, and investment, and support more effective policy formulation.
“This advancement strengthens Botswana’s capacity for evidence-based planning and directly supports our national priorities under the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) and the upcoming National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12),” Minister Mmolotsi said.
The initiative highlights the growing importance of tourism as a driver of sustainable economic diversification in Botswana, a country renowned for its pristine wilderness, iconic wildlife destinations such as the Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park, and high-value, low-impact tourism model.
The dashboard will be hosted on the websites of Statistics Botswana and the Botswana Tourism Organisation, ensuring wide accessibility for government agencies, private sector operators, investors, and other stakeholders.

Minister Mmolotsi commended the Government of Japan and JICA for their technical expertise and ongoing support, while also acknowledging the contributions of national institutions in ensuring the platform’s reliability and integrity.
He called on all data-producing entities to uphold high standards of consistency and timeliness in feeding information into the system, stressing that the dashboard’s effectiveness depends on the quality of its inputs.
“Data must serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth, sustainable strategies, and impactful decision-making,” the Minister added.
The launch comes as Botswana continues to position tourism as a cornerstone of its economic transformation agenda. By providing accurate, timely statistics, the new platform is expected to help the sector enhance competitiveness, improve destination marketing, attract targeted investment, and promote responsible tourism practices that align with environmental conservation goals.
Officials described the Tourism Statistics Dashboard not just as a technological tool, but as a strategic compass that will guide Botswana’s tourism industry towards greater resilience, sustainability, and long-term success in an increasingly competitive global market.
