The Federal Government of Nigeria has sought for support from the European Union (EU) for assistance in deepening and consolidating democratic practices in the country, with a particular focus on electoral processes.
During a meeting with the delegation from the EU Election Observation Mission, led by Chief Observer Barry Andrews, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, expressed gratitude for the EU’s participation in the 2023 general elections and highlighted the significant progress made by Nigeria in its electoral processes.
Akume emphasized the importance of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, which played a crucial role during the recent elections, and called on the EU to support Nigeria in further advancing democratic principles.
Barry Andrews, the Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission, outlined six priority recommendations from the EU report.
He announced that a follow-up mission would be conducted within two years to engage with Nigerian authorities regarding the implementation status of the recommendations.
Samuela Isopi, the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and the Economic Community of West African States, acknowledged the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s journey towards democracy.
The EU has been collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission and other key stakeholders to bolster democratic processes in the nation.
