South Africa Minister of Employment and Labour, Thembelani Waltermade Nxesi has been declared as Africa Public Sector magazine’s “Minister of the Week”.
The highly-rated APS Minister of the Week is a weekly review of the performances of the African government’s ministers. It’s based on high scrutiny and data analysis of the ministers.
Mr TW Nxesi was appointed as Minister of Employment and Labour on 30th May, 2019. He was once a Minister of Public Works and Minister of Sports and Recreation of the Republic.
As the Minister of Employment and Labour, he has proffer policies and government actions to mitigate the country’s age-long unemployment rate.
According to him, South Africa’s education requires a rethink to produce the type of skills that are responsive to the needs of its economy.
He has been formulating and leading strategic efforts toward South Africa’s economic reconstruction and recovery plan that will offer employment opportunities and create more skills among the youths.
His ministry recently embarked on its new power station building programme for the Medupi and Kusile plants. That programme stimulated demand for workers, including welders.
The ministry also runs initiatives under the umbrella of public employment programmes which offers relief in combating the unemployment rate in the country.
He launched the 5th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour which was held from 15-20 May in South Africa to help find solutions toward the elimination of child labour.
During that period, he said, “The time is therefore opportune for the global community to converge on African soil to find solutions that will help our continent, in particular, to deal with the reported highest prevalence and the largest number of working children.”
He also signed a bilateral memorandum with Switzerland Minister Federal Guy Parmelin in Pretoria. The focus of the memorandum was on addressing the global challenges of unemployment.
Early this month, the minister launched a youth future of work program at Lynwood Pretoria. A high number of young people will be deployed to some departments across the country to gain some work experience. He also launched the employment equity & the code of good practice reports.
The ministry launched a joint employment project with the University of KwaZulu-Natal in KZN. The project has benefited a number of UIF beneficiaries with some young people
