The Director-General of National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Kenya, Mamo Boru Mamo has emerged as Africa Public Sector Magazine’s “CEO of the Week.”
The highly-rated CEO of the Week is a weekly rating of Top-performing CEOs of Africa Public institutions, and MDAs, evaluating achievements and portfolios and other criteria.
Mamo holds an MSc in Environmental Education from Kenyatta University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from Egerton University. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in climate change and Sustainability at Kenyatta University.
He was appointed as the Director-General following a competitive process on 13th August 2020.
Last year the Environment Management Authority started a major crackdown on single-use plastic bags across the country. This comes after the authority expressed concern that some traders are still sneaking the commodity into the country despite its ban in 2017.
The Authority successfully enforced the ban on plastic carrier bags among others and this was a major milestone. The success is attributed to enhanced enforcement, strengthening of strategic partnerships, public goodwill and support.
As the Director-General, the Authority has prioritized processing of licenses of projects that contribute to the Big four agenda; coordination and management of water bodies, biodiversity and eco-systems; enforcement of environmental laws; reviewing regulations for the improvement of environment management; promotion of the principles of green and circular economy initiatives that reduce carbon emission; environmental research for critical areas to improve decision making; and enhanced environmental education and awareness among others.
Mamo was awarded the Elder of Burning Spear (EBS) accolade by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta on 16th December 2021 due to his effort in safeguarding the environment.
His vision is to ensure “a clean, healthy and sustainable environment” and the mission “to coordinate, supervise and manage all matters relating to the environment in Kenya”.
