Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board Chairman Hon. Caleb Kositany conducted an on-site visit to Kisumu International Airport (KIA) to evaluate progress on critical infrastructure developments, particularly the ongoing runway widening project aimed at elevating the facility to international standards.
The centerpiece of the upgrades is the widening of a 300-metre runway section to Code 4E specifications, expanding it from 45 metres to 60 metres with 7.5-metre shoulders on each side. The works include asphalt concrete surfacing, fresh pavement markings, and the reinstatement of runway edge lights to enhance safety and accommodate larger aircraft.

During the tour, hosted by KAA Regional Airport Manager for the Western Region, Felix Wanga, Chairman Kositany reviewed the proposed runway extension site, a potential new hangar development area, the recently commissioned Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) control tower, and the airport’s fire station. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve operational capacity, safety protocols, and efficiency at KIA.
