The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has rolled out a nationwide health insurance scheme for more than 7,000 petrol-station attendants, a move officials say will boost worker welfare, sharpen customer service, and anchor long-term business growth.
Launched Wednesday at the NNPC Mega Station in Abuja by NNPC Retail Ltd in partnership with NNPC HMO, the Attendants’ Health Insurance Scheme guarantees every frontline attendant access to a nationwide network of accredited hospitals. The initiative forms the cornerstone of a broader “Attendant Framework” aimed at elevating working conditions and, in turn, the customer experience at the pump.
Baba-Shettima Kukawa, Executive Director for Retail Operations and Mobility, who stood in for NNPC Retail Managing Director, called the program “a game-changer in a market where service excellence is the new currency.”
“Attendants are our face to millions of Nigerians every day,” Kukawa told the gathering of uniformed staff and executives. “Their health, morale, and professionalism directly shape every transaction. Starting this month, full HMO coverage will remove the fear of medical bills, letting them focus on delivering care, speed, and courtesy that keep customers coming back.”
The scheme, he added, is not charity but strategy: healthier workers mean fewer absences, higher productivity, and stronger loyalty—both from staff and motorists.

Ademola Adebusuyi, NNPC HMO’s Deputy Director of Information Technology, assured attendants that the plan connects them to “trusted hospitals in every state.”
“Good health is the engine of great service,” Adebusuyi said. “Whether you’re posted in Sokoto or Port Harcourt, one phone call or visit to an accredited facility is all it takes. You are never alone—NNPC stands behind you.”
Dorcas Luke Onyeche, a customer-service attendant at the Mega Station, spoke for her colleagues when she hailed the move as “a confidence booster.”
“Now we can serve with peace of mind,” she said. “When management invests in our health, we give even more to the customers and the company.”
The launch comes as NNPC Retail pushes to modernize its 500-plus stations nationwide, blending digital payment systems, cleaner forecourts, and now comprehensive employee benefits. Industry watchers say the insurance rollout could set a new benchmark for labor standards in Nigeria’s downstream petroleum sector.
