The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) presented the Ogoni Consultations Report at the State House on Wednesday, marking a pivotal moment under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The re-entry into Ogoniland has been hailed as a historic milestone for Nigeria, blending oil production with a renewed commitment to justice and community development.
President Tinubu, addressing the gathering, acknowledged the decades of hardship endured by the Ogoni people, stating, “We are not, as a government, taking lightly the years of pain endured in Ogoniland. We recognise that, otherwise we would not be here today… We declare with conviction that hope is here and is back with us.”
This re-entry, he emphasized, aligns with his administration’s vision of strengthening Nigeria, attracting responsible investment, and prioritizing host community prosperity.
NNPC Ltd’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, echoed this sentiment, describing the re-entry as a bold step toward justice, healing, and national prosperity. “The re-entry into Ogoniland is not just about oil and gas. It is about justice, healing, and charting a new future for our nation,” Ojulari said. He highlighted that the initiative showcases how equity, environmental stewardship, and inclusive nation-building can coexist, setting a global example for resource-rich nations.
Ojulari credited the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for convening a diverse stakeholder committee, and praised Professor Don Baridam and the Presidential Committee for their transparent efforts in fostering dialogue. Ribadu noted the report’s creation through intensive, methodical engagement, while Baridam thanked the President for his dedication to the Ogoni people’s well-being.
NNPC Ltd has already initiated road construction, infrastructure upgrades, and economic empowerment programs to rebuild trust. Ojulari affirmed, “NNPC Ltd is determined to transform Ogoniland from a symbol of conflict into a beacon of reconciliation, renewal, and sustainable progress.”
