The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is set to deliver passports to Nigerians within one week, following the launch of a Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at its headquarters in Abuja — the first centralisation of passport production in 62 years.
Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who inspected the facility on Thursday, said the new system is “100 per cent ready,” marking a major milestone in service delivery.
Previously, passport machines could only process 250–300 booklets daily. The centralised system now has the capacity to produce 4,500–5,000 passports every day, meeting national demand in just four to five hours of operation.
“We promised two-week delivery, and we’re now pushing for one week,” Tunji-Ojo stated, describing the reform as a game-changer. “Automation and optimisation are crucial to keeping this promise to Nigerians.”
He noted that the shift to centralised production, in line with global standards, will not only improve efficiency but also enhance the integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide. The reform, he added, reflects President Bola Tinubu’s agenda to modernise public services and boost citizens’ confidence in national institutions.
