President Bola Ahmed Tinubu today commissioned a 40,000 cubic meter (CBM) Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessel, MT Iyaloja (Lagos), in Ulsan, South Korea, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions across Africa.
Represented by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo, Tinubu praised WAGL Energy Limited, a joint venture between NNPC Limited and Sahara Group, for advancing Africa’s role in the global clean energy market.
The dual-fuel, fully refrigerated LPG carrier, owned by WAGL, boosts the company’s fleet capacity to 162,000 CBM, joining vessels like MT Africa Gas, MT Sahara Gas, MT BaruMK, and MT Sapet.
The fleet has delivered over 6 million metric tons of LPG across West Africa in the past five years. Tinubu commended WAGL, NNPC, and Sahara Group for their technical excellence and strategic vision in bridging Africa’s energy infrastructure gap.
NNPC’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari, represented by Executive Vice President for Gas, Power & New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, described the vessel as a milestone in Nigeria’s gas development.
He highlighted NNPC’s focus on ensuring LPG affordability and accessibility nationwide, with MT Iyaloja playing a pivotal role in economic growth.
WAGL’s Chairman and Sahara Group Executive Director, Mr. Temitope Shonubi, noted that the vessel, named after the late Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, embodies progress and empowerment.
WAGL’s Managing Director, Mr. Mohammed Sani Bello, announced plans to expand the fleet with a Small Gas Carrier and a Very Large Gas Carrier within two years, strengthening the company’s integrated energy supply network.
