The South African government has welcomed the growth in employment recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, as revealed in the latest Quarterly Employment Statistics report by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).
According to the report, employment in the formal non-agricultural sector increased by 12,000 jobs, bringing the total number of employed individuals to 10.64 million by December 2024. This represents a 0.1% increase compared to the previous quarter, signaling a modest but positive trend in job creation.
The trade industry led the job gains, followed by the business services sector. Additional employment growth was also observed in the transport and electricity sectors, reflecting ongoing efforts to strengthen key industries.
The data further shows that full-time employment increased by 10,000 jobs, suggesting gradual stability in the job market. Part-time employment also saw a slight rise, adding 2,000 jobs, from 1.151 million in September 2024 to 1.153 million in December 2024.

Another positive indicator in the report is the 6.1% increase in total gross earnings paid to employees, highlighting improved income levels across sectors.
Government’s Response and Commitment to Job Creation
While acknowledging the quarterly improvement, the government noted that full-time employment remains lower compared to a year ago. However, the increase aligns with ongoing efforts by both government and businesses to boost employment and economic recovery.
In a statement, the government reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside businesses, labor unions, and social partners to accelerate job creation efforts and drive inclusive economic growth.
