The Ministry of Works and Housing has officially commenced the ‘District Housing Program,’ an initiative aimed at addressing housing needs in both urban and rural communities across Ghana.
Speaking at a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Information on Monday, September 30, 2024, Minister for Works and Housing, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, outlined the government’s comprehensive strategy to tackle the nation’s housing deficit.
“We have started work on a new district housing program, which is one of the initiatives under the housing policy. This one focuses on ensuring that we don’t just develop housing in the urban areas but also in the rural areas,” Oppong Nkrumah noted.
The Ministry has identified eight key priorities to confront Ghana’s growing housing shortage, which currently stands at 1.8 million units.
These priorities include resolving stalled housing projects, fast-tracking ongoing affordable housing programs, and expanding public sector housing.
The government will also focus on securing land banks, developing a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework, and implementing sustainable financing mechanisms for housing projects.
In related news, the government is in the final stages of negotiations to transfer the long-delayed Saglemi Housing Project to a private developer for completion.
Initially planned to deliver 5,000 affordable housing units, only 1,506 units were partially completed due to a lack of essential infrastructure.
The project, which has been stalled for years, will now be completed through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) involving private sector firms, with the Ministry shortlisting Quarm-LMI Consortium and Broll Ghana Ltd for the final negotiations.
