The Volta River Authority (VRA) has officially concluded the controlled spilling of the Akosombo dam.
This controlled spillage, which began on September 15, 2023, came to an end on October 30, as announced by VRA.
The authority expressed its gratitude to government agencies and stakeholders for their support to the affected communities, particularly residents living along the Lower Volta River and its environs.
Despite the conclusion of the spillage, VRA indicated that it remains dedicated to ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts to restore the lives and livelihoods of those impacted.
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer of VRA, Ing. Edward Obeng-Kenzo, revealed that the water inflow into the Akosombo dam had significantly decreased, and the water level had dropped to an acceptable level by October 27, thanks to the closure of the dam’s gate.
This controlled spilling, initiated in response to a consistent rise in the inflow pattern and water level of the Akosombo reservoir, had led to the submersion of thousands of residents in various areas, including South Tongu, North Tongu, Central Tongu, Asuogyaman, and others.
