Central Energy Fund (CEF) welcomes and fully supports the recent announcement made by the Minister of Transport, Honourable Barbara Creecy, regarding the strategic allocation of 15% access to the Durban Island View Terminal to advance transformation in the energy sector and pave way for the reinstatement of the SANPC refinery (formerly known as Sapref).
This directive means that CEF will be guaranteed access to the existing terminal infrastructure, which was historically granted only to international and local oil companies, within the port limits, including marine and landside infrastructure for landing, exporting and evacuating cargoes.
As the agency mandated with the security of energy supply in the country, we view these developments as critical milestones to advance the national agenda in ensuring energy security, drive inclusive economic participation, particularly of the historically disadvantaged entities in the energy sector as well as revitalizing South Africa’s refining capacity.
Minister Creecy’s proactive approach and leadership in enabling access to key energy infrastructure for historically disadvantaged entities reflects a strong commitment to the principle of equitable growth and sustainable transformation in the energy sector.
In line with the CEF’s investment and growth strategy in the energy value chain, this allocation will go a long way in reviving and re-instating the SANPC refinery as well as reducing reliance on imported petroleum products and creating much needed local jobs in the energy sector.
CEF, through its subsidiaries and strategic partners, remains committed to playing a catalytic role in supporting infrastructure investment, ensuring the security of energy supply and advancing transformation across the energy sector.
We look forward to continued collaboration with government, private sector stakeholders, including the historically disadvantaged companies, and affected communities to ensure the successful implementation of these initiatives to address the three triple challenges of unemployment, energy poverty and inequality.
