The African Tax Administration Forum (ATAF) has hosted a high-level delegation from the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) at its Secretariat in Pretoria, South Africa, for a knowledge-sharing engagement focused on the ATAF Tax Academy.
The visit, which comes a year after the launch of the URA Tax Academy in August 2024, aimed to build on Uganda’s efforts to professionalise and strengthen the skills of its tax officials. The URA team met with ATAF experts to gain insights into managing a regional centre of excellence for tax training.
URA officials reflected on the value of their long-standing collaboration with ATAF. On average, more than 35 URA officials receive specialised training from ATAF each year, while 8–10 URA experts contribute to peer-to-peer knowledge-sharing missions across the continent. This dual role, they noted, has positioned Uganda as both a beneficiary and a contributor within the ATAF network.
Uganda has also pioneered the application of scientific approaches to tax administration, extending access to its programmes to all ATAF members – a move seen as a strong commitment to regional cooperation and knowledge exchange.
ATAF officials praised the partnership, describing it as a clear example of African-led collaboration to strengthen domestic resource mobilisation. “URA’s collaboration reflects the essence of ATAF’s mission – building stronger, future-ready tax administrations through African-led solutions,” an official noted.
The engagement reaffirmed ATAF’s role as a trusted partner in advancing capacity development for African tax administrations while underscoring Uganda’s leadership in driving innovative training models for the continent’s revenue officials.
