The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo has emphasized the imperative for African nations to embrace technological advancements as a driver of prosperity.
Addressing the 3i Summit in Accra, he urged governments to prioritize substantial investments in digital infrastructure, emphasizing its foundational role in achieving shared prosperity.
President Akufo-Addo highlighted the transformative potential of modern technologies in reshaping Africa’s economic landscape, stating, “To realize fully these benefits, we must embrace the technologies that are reshaping the global economy and make them work for us.”
Despite a growing consensus among African leaders on the pivotal role of technology in driving sustainable growth, there remains a significant digital infrastructure deficit across the continent.
According to the Brooking Institute, African countries spend about 1.1 percent of their GDP on digital investment, compared to an average of 3.2 percent by advanced economies.
The President’s call aligns with efforts to bridge the digital divide, crucial for reaping the full benefits of initiatives like the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which aims to lift millions out of poverty and boost intra-African trade.
