The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has reported that in the period between July and December 2023, 84. 93% of energy supplied to Kenyas national grid was obtained from renewable sources.
This revelation was made in their just released
Biannual Energy and Petroleum Statistics report.
The report further revealed Thermal plant contributed 8.91%, while 6.16% was imported. Within the realm of renewable sources Geothermal energy maintained its dominance meeting 44.55% of Kenyas total energy generated.
Hydro and wind generation accounted for 22.54% and 14.30% respectively.
Additionally, utility-scale generation contributed 3.54% to the countries overall energy needs.
The report further added that as of December 2023, the installed capacity of renewable energy sources 2, 776.3MW constituting Kenya’s total installed capacity.
This achievement according to the report aligns with Kenya Governments target of achieving its electrical energy generation from renewable sources by 2030.
In pursuit of this goal the government launched the Kenya Energy Transition Investment Plan (ETIP) at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) during the period under review.
