President Mokgweetsi Eric Keabetswe Masisi has officially appointed Mr. Cornelius Karlens Dekop as the new Governor of the Bank of Botswana, effective from October 21, 2023.
The appointment comes in line with the stipulations set out in Section 13 of the Bank of Botswana (Amendment) Act, 2022, which allows the President, after consultation with the Minister of Finance, to choose a candidate with renowned expertise in economics and financial matters for the Governor position.
Mr. Dekop succeeds Mr. Moses Pelaelo, a dedicated servant to the Bank for over three decades, with seven years at the helm as Governor.
The Bank expressed its gratitude to Mr. Pelaelo, wishing him a peaceful retirement.
Cornelius Dekop is no stranger to executive roles, having previously served as the Executive Director of the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the African Development Fund, representing the Southern Africa Group 1 Constituency.
His career boasts various prestigious positions, including Secretary for Development Programmes and Budget at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning and Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security.
With a rich educational background from institutions such as Williams College and Harvard University, Dekop’s appointment has been greeted with anticipation and warmth by the Bank of Botswana Board, Management, and Staff who are confident in his potential contributions towards the institution’s leadership and its objectives.
