The Department of Water and Sanitation, together with its entities Umgeni and Mhlathuze Water, is set to host the National Water and Sanitation Youth Indaba from 26-30 June 2023.
The highly anticipated event, taking place at the Durban International Convention Centre, aims to unite young professionals in the water and sanitation sector and stimulate the generation of innovative ideas to address pressing challenges.
Themed “Accelerating Youth Economic Emancipation for a Sustainable Future,” the Indaba seeks to promote collaboration, technical expertise, and knowledge sharing among the youth, ultimately enhancing institutional governance, job creation, skills development, economic growth, and social cohesion within the sector.
Minister Senzo Mchunu, along with Deputy Ministers David Mahlobo and Judith Tshabalala, will deliver keynote addresses during the inaugural day of the Indaba on Monday, 26 June 2023, joined by esteemed board members from Umgeni and Mhlathuze Water.
In addition to the knowledge-sharing sessions and presentations, the youth participants will also have the opportunity to explore various water-related sites during the Indaba.
On Thursday, 29 June 2023, an excursion will take the young professionals to the Midmar Dam and a water treatment plant, as well as the Darvill and Reuse site.

This hands-on experience aims to deepen their understanding of water management processes and inspire them to contribute meaningfully to service delivery in their communities.
The Youth Indaba forms part of the Department’s Youth Month commemoration, acting as a platform to showcase available opportunities for youth development and enlighten young individuals about their vital role within the water and sanitation sector, aligning with governmental plans and activities.
