The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, has called on courts across Ghana to impose stringent bail conditions on persons standing trial in illegal mining cases.
Mr Dame expressed concern that some accused individuals have absconded during prosecution due to lenient bail conditions granted by the courts.
In a statement released on Tuesday May 2, 2023, Mr Dame emphasized that some accused persons who were granted bail returned to engage in illegal mining, the very offense(s) for which they were being prosecuted.
The Attorney-General and Minister of Justice urged the courts to take into consideration the gravity of illegal mining and its impact on the environment and the country’s socio-economic development when imposing bail conditions.
