The National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Vincent Olatunji, is participating in the globally renowned Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, where he is holding a series of high-level engagements aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s data protection and digital security framework.
As part of the congress activities, Dr Olatunji attended the Data Protection Authorities Round Table and several closed-door conference sessions, engaging with global regulators and industry leaders on emerging trends in privacy governance, regulatory enforcement, and digital trust.

In alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into Nigeria, the NDPC boss also held a bilateral meeting with officials of the Groupe Spécial Mobile Association (GSMA). The discussions explored areas of strategic collaboration, regulatory alignment, and capacity development within Nigeria’s fast-growing digital ecosystem.
Dr Olatunji further toured exhibition stands at the congress, identifying innovative solutions and potential partnerships with key technology providers and stakeholders that could enhance Nigeria’s data protection infrastructure and digital compliance landscape.

During his engagements, the NDPC chief highlighted Nigeria’s experience and sustained efforts in combating mobile money scams, particularly those linked to certain digital lending companies operating within the country. He outlined regulatory interventions and enforcement measures aimed at protecting citizens’ personal data and restoring public confidence in digital financial services.
Discussions also examined opportunities for enhanced awareness campaigns and capacity-building initiatives to strengthen scam prevention mechanisms across Nigeria’s mobile money ecosystem. Emphasis was placed on cross-border cooperation, intelligence sharing, and the adoption of global best practices in fraud detection and data governance.
The NDPC stated that Dr Olatunji’s participation at the Mobile World Congress forms part of the Commission’s broader strategy to deepen Nigeria’s data protection and privacy ecosystem, while remaining actively engaged in global conversations shaping the future of digital regulation and responsible innovation.
