Western Cape Human Settlements Minister Tertuis Simmers officially broke ground on the new Bitterfontein Housing Project, a development set to deliver homes to approximately 98 families in the Matzikama municipal area.
Speaking at the sod-turning ceremony, Minister Simmers emphasized the province’s commitment to expanding housing opportunities. “Ninety-eight families are set to benefit from this crucial housing development,” he said. “Once bulk services are installed, we will commence with construction of top structures. The Western Cape Government is delivering housing opportunities just like this all across the province. Providing stable, safe and affordable housing is part of our plan to drive economic inclusion, growth and jobs.”
Bulk infrastructure for the Bitterfontein project is scheduled for completion by March 2026, after which the construction of houses (top structures) will begin.

114 title deeds handed over in Vredendal
Earlier the same day in nearby Vredendal, Minister Simmers handed over 114 title deeds to beneficiaries of the recently completed Vredendal North Phase 6 housing project, which delivered 264 new housing opportunities.
Highlighting the speed of delivery, the Minister noted that top-structure construction for Phase 6 only started in February 2025. “Already here we are handing over title deeds. This is delivery in action, providing safe and affordable housing to communities in Vredendal,” Simmers said.
He also announced that planning for Vredendal North Phase 7 is already underway, signaling continued investment in the area.
“The Western Cape Government is working across the province to deliver projects just like this – in fact, I am happy to announce that Phase 7 of this project is already in the planning stage,” the Minister concluded.
