The Digital Economy Indaba, hosted in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) National Youth Service (NYS), brought together key leaders to pave the way for youth empowerment in South Africa’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Hon. Sindisiwe Chikunga, and NYDA Executive Chairperson Dr. Sunshine Myende headlined the event, emphasizing the critical role of digital skills in combating youth unemployment.
The Indaba marked a significant step toward equipping young South Africans with the tools, access, and opportunities needed to thrive in tech-driven industries. Far from being limited to coding, the digital economy encompasses innovation, creativity, and leadership in a data-driven world, as highlighted by NYDA leaders. The event underscored the agency’s commitment to fostering tangible programs that enable young people to work, trade, create, and lead in this transformative space.

“We know the future of work is digital,” said Dr. Myende. “Ensuring our youth are ready to participate meaningfully in this economy is key to unlocking their potential and addressing unemployment.” The NYDA’s focus is on creating pathways that provide not only technical skills but also opportunities for entrepreneurship and innovation.
Minister Chikunga echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of inclusive initiatives that empower youth, women, and persons with disabilities to seize opportunities in the digital era. The Indaba served as a platform to explore partnerships and programs that will drive these goals forward, ensuring young South Africans are at the forefront of the nation’s economic transformation.
