The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), in collaboration with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), opened the ICAO Traveler Identification Programme (TRIP) Strategy Training on August 18 at Mestil Hotel in Kampala.
The five-day program, running through August 22, has convened 100 Ugandan officials from immigration, aviation, customs, and law enforcement to enhance traveler identification systems and aviation security.
The training focuses on the five pillars of the ICAO TRIP strategy: evidence of identity, document issuance and control, machine-readable travel documents, inspection systems and tools, and interoperable applications. These elements aim to strengthen border security and streamline passenger processing.
In his opening remarks, Uganda CAA Director General Fred K. Bamwesigye underscored the importance of accurate identification for aviation safety, border security, and an improved passenger experience.
He also highlighted Uganda’s strong performance in the 2024 ICAO Security Audit, which reaffirmed the country’s adherence to global aviation security standards.
The training comes at a critical time, as Entebbe International Airport handled 1.13 million international passengers in the first half of 2025, with ongoing expansion works to accommodate growing traffic.
