Benon Kigenyi, Deputy Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), has issued a firm directive to road construction contractors to prioritize safety, cleanliness, and utility management during the ongoing Kampala City Roads Rehabilitation Project (KCRRP). The call came during an inspection of key project sites in the Industrial Area on Thursday, focusing on roads under Lot III, including 5th, 6th, and 7th Streets.
Kigenyi criticized inadequate safety measures, such as open manholes secured only by caution tape. “It’s not enough to put up warning tapes. Just close the manholes,” he stated, emphasizing the need to prevent accidents for pedestrians and motorists. He also instructed contractors to maintain tidy construction sites, clear debris blocking business access, and provide safe pedestrian walkways. “Construction must not paralyze businesses,” Kigenyi added.

Highlighting utility coordination, Kigenyi urged contractors to install duct lines for underground cables to reduce the city’s cluttered overhead wires. “Too many hanging cables are unsightly and dangerous,” he said. “This is our chance to move them underground.”
Accompanied by Eng. Justus Akankwasa, Director of Engineering and Technical Services, and Eng. Maurice Kairania, Deputy Director for Roads and Drainages, Kigenyi inspected progress on the KCRRP, a flagship initiative funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Uganda. The project aims to rehabilitate over 70 kilometers of roads, improve drainage to combat flooding, and install streetlights for enhanced safety.
KCCA reaffirmed its commitment to quality and minimal disruption, ensuring the project supports Kampala’s residents and businesses while transforming the city’s infrastructure.
