Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey has made history as the first Ghanaian to be elected Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, marking a moment of national pride.
Announced during the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa, her election is a significant achievement for Ghana and for women leaders globally.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo celebrated the victory, noting Ayorkor Botchwey’s “unwavering dedication to service” and exemplary leadership qualities.
The president emphasized the unity and cooperation her role represents within the Commonwealth and extended his gratitude to fellow leaders who supported her candidacy.
President Akufo-Addo also acknowledged the work of outgoing Secretary-General, the Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, KC, commending her valuable contributions.
In his address, he described Ayorkor Botchwey as a “passionate advocate” who would help steer the Commonwealth toward greater cooperation and resilience.
The president expressed his appreciation to Samoa’s Prime Minister, Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, and the Samoan government for their warm hospitality during the summit.
