The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has launched its highly anticipated B-Odogwu system, a new cargo documentation processing platform, at the Ports Multipurpose Terminal Limited (PTML) command. This development marks a significant step towards a modernized and efficient customs administration.
Speaking at the launch, Comptroller General of Customs Bashir Adewale Adeniyi expressed confidence in the system’s success, despite potential start-up hiccups, noting, “We are poised to retool and make this a success.”
The pilot scheme signals the end of the service’s collaboration with ICT firm Webb Fontaine, which had previously been contracted to handle customs documentation.
Adeniyi emphasized that the B-Odogwu system reflects the NCS’s resolve to become self-reliant after years of unsatisfactory results from external service providers.
He noted that Webb Fontaine’s contract officially ended in December 2021 but the firm continued to offer subpar services.
“It is disappointing when organizations fail to build credible reputations,” Adeniyi remarked, highlighting how this challenge inspired the NCS to develop an indigenous solution. The CGC further elaborated that B-Odogwu will streamline customs processes, enhance end-to-end business operations, and offer seamless integration with stakeholders in the trade sector.
The pilot test at PTML was selected due to the terminal’s history of efficient customs operations, its modern infrastructure, and high transaction volume. Adeniyi acknowledged the likelihood of technical challenges during the system’s early stages but reassured stakeholders of immediate support.
“We will take our lessons, make mistakes, and correct them,” he said, expressing optimism that the system will become a cornerstone of Nigeria’s customs trade, eventually eliminating network downtimes and ensuring swifter document processing.
