President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially launched the construction of a $450 million manganese processing plant at Nsuta in Ghana’s Western Region.
The groundbreaking event, which took place on October 23, 2024, marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to add value to its mineral resources.
Present at the ceremony were key figures, including Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor and the Managing Director of the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), Jurgen Eijgendaal.
The refinery is expected to greatly boost Ghana’s economy by creating substantial employment opportunities and generating increased revenue from the manganese industry.
Speaking at the event, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of value addition in the country’s mineral sector. “Today marks a major milestone in our quest to add value to our natural resources,” the President said.
“This refinery will not only create jobs but also increase our revenue from manganese exports.” He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that Ghana retains a larger share of the manganese value chain.
Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor praised the President’s leadership in pushing the value addition agenda, while GMC Managing Director Jurgen Eijgendaal expressed the company’s commitment to delivering a world-class facility.
This project is seen as a major step towards Ghana’s ambition of becoming a regional hub for processing and adding value to its mineral resources, positioning the country for future economic growth.
