The Ministry of Health has announced the implementation of a groundbreaking national health insurance policy targeted at foreigners visiting Ghana for short stays.
Dubbed the “National Non-Resident Visitors Health Insurance” (NNRVHIS), the policy will officially launch on July 1, 2024.
Developed in collaboration with the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) and other partners, this initiative targets non-residents visiting the country for less than six months within any 12-month period.
Launching the policy in Accra, Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu emphasized that the new insurance aligns with the National Health Insurance Act, 2012 (Act 852), which mandates providing quality healthcare to both residents and non-residents.
“The scheme will be the main vehicle for the delivery of robust healthcare services to non-residents who will be travelling to Ghana,” said Mr. Agyeman-Manu.
He highlighted that the initiative seeks to enhance access to equitable health services, thus improving the quality of life for all visitors.
The NNRVHIS will include a National Non-Resident Visitors Health Insurance Technology Platform (NNRVHITP), enabling visitors to apply for insurance remotely from their home countries.
The policy features six tiers based on the duration of stay and includes provisions for foreigners requiring visas on arrival.
However, citizens from ECOWAS member states are currently excluded, with future plans to incorporate them into the scheme.
