All cargo trucks traversing Ghana’s highways are now required to submit to weighing at designated weighbridge stations.
This is to ensure road safety and compliance with weight regulations.
These weighbridges, overseen by officials from the Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) and a Police officer, serve as crucial checkpoints for monitoring and enforcing weight restrictions on commercial vehicles.
According to the newly implemented Road Traffic Regulations, failure to comply with the mandatory weighing process could result in penalties of 25 units or 8 months imprisonment, or both, for the non-compliant cargo truck operators.
The role of the GHA officials in this process is pivotal. Upon stopping at a weighbridge station, the GHA official is tasked with weighing the cargo truck and providing the driver with a printout detailing the recorded weight.
“If the truck is found to be overweigh, the original logbook and waybill will be collected by the GHA official, copied and returned to the truck driver,”
