The Nigeria Customs Service has initiated a nationwide promotion examination for its officers, marking a significant shift towards merit-based promotions.
The examinations commenced on Tuesday at Sascon International School in Abuja, with officers holding the ranks of Deputy Comptrollers, Assistant Comptrollers, and Chief Superintendent of Customs participating in the assessments.
The Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, reiterated the service’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and fair promotion process.
In his remarks, he emphasized that promotions are now primarily determined by an officer’s performance and competency, rather than favoritism or connections.
Adeniyi stated, “We had some pep talks with them to help them believe in the system and understand all the efforts that we have made to ensure that there is a lot of integrity in the process.
We want them to know that promotion now is based on performance and not who you know.” He further emphasized that the customs service aims to reward officers who demonstrate a deep understanding of their roles and excel in their responsibilities.
